Are you a Tarot Newbie? Part Two

Updated: Aug 15, 2023

Once you’ve chosen a deck, it’s important to spend time with it. I recommend both structured and unstructured time.

Some examples of structured time would be to review traditional interpretations of the cards, explore different spreads, and start to build your conscious connection to the cards.

Some examples of unstructured time would be to use a card in meditation. When you meditate, choose a card to focus on. After shifting into a quite, still place with your meditation, look deeply at the card. Before any interpretation, allow your eyes to take in the whole scene. What shapes or colors stand out? What’s the overall emotional sense you experience with the card? This helps the cards become a part of your consciousness.

As you begin to get used to the cards, you can start a tarot journal. One good practice is to draw a card each morning. In your journal make a note of the card and any initial thoughts you have about it. Put it out of your mind until night. Then, looking at the card in the evening, notice if it predicted anything about your day. See if the images related to what you experienced that day. Practicing this over time brings you closer to your deck and what it can tell you.

Enjoy your time with your new tarot deck!
